Houtzen on borderline for Magic Millions
Dec 24, 2016
Gold Coast youngster Houtzen remains a borderline contender for next month’s Magic Millions Classic after a runaway win at Doomben on Saturday.
Houtzen, ridden by premier jockey Jeff Lloyd, showed blistering gate speed in her debut before going on to down Garrard by four lengths.
She’s Our Star filled the minor placing, a further three-quarters of a length away.
Houtzen started a heavily backed favourite following an impressive barrier trial win at the Gold Coast earlier this month.
She ran a sizzling 59.43 seconds to set a new class record which was only 0.24 seconds outside the track record for the 1050-metre dash.
Trainer Toby Edmonds used ear muffs on the daughter of I Am Invincible who cost $105,000 at the Magic Millions sales.
Her win earned her just over $40,000 but isn’t enough to put her into the final field of 16 for the $2 million Magic Millions Guineas (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 14.
“Jeff knew before the race he was on the best horse and just let her run along,” Edmonds said.
“If we have to give her another run to make the Magic Millions then so be it.”
