New Star Of The Turf Born...
Jun 12, 2016
It didn’t win but I think we might have seen the birth of a future turf star today at eagle farm…..or at very least a horse who has a terrific amount of ability!
I like many, said “what the” when the Toby Edmonds stable accepted for the Stradbroke with their 3yo galloper ‘The Virginian’.
The gelding who was originally trained by Peter and Paul Snowden in Sydney but was moved along after three what were obviously considered ordinary trial efforts! Toby Edmonds on the Gold Coast became the horse’s new trainer.
After the numbers at acceptance time dropped right off, the Hinchinbrook gelding had the seemingly unthinkable happen and got a start in the final field of Group 1 feature, QLD’s biggest and richest race, despite only being a 1200m Gold Coast class 1 winner!
Bookies put him up a 150-1 chance and to most including me that seemed under the odds! Ubet even laid a $1,000 bet to lose $150,000 on the galloper.
What happened race day was even more extraordinary than the fact The Virginian, a class 1 winner somehow got a run itself!
The horse came out and ran a terrific 3rd just 3.4l off the winner under the louvre and runner-up Black Heart Bart…….it was a brilliant run - take a look!!
He was a decisive third as well, not just a lucky one if there even is such thing in a Group 1, with Group 1 winning galloper Delectation finishing in 4th a massive 3.5 lengths behind The Virginian.
Having just his 4th start in a race it was for mine the biggest run of the day by a mile.
He has such an exciting future ahead of him now; let’s hope we get to see the very best of him.
Kudos to Toby Edmonds and his team for having the guts to throw him right in the deep end and come up trumps!
You can’t even get a picture of him from google he was so little well known before his run today, so all I can include is a picture of his silks. What a star he’ll be if he keeps getting better and stays fit and healthy!
