Fiery Heights On Way To Gold Coast Guineas

Apr 02, 2016

Under-rated sprinter Fiery Heights booked a start in next month’s Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas following the three-year-old’s narrow victory at Doomben on Saturday.

Fiery Heights, ridden by former South African Jeff Lloyd, led all the way to hold on for a short neck win over the fast finishing Havasay in the Andrew Goves 40th Birthday QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap (1350m).

Stella Ombra was a further 2-3/4 lengths away, third.

Trainer Toby Edmonds wasn’t overly confident before the race despite Fiery Heights' record of finishing first or second in eight of his previous nine starts.

Fiery Heights went down in a photo to fellow Gold Coast three-year-old Big Tree at his previous start on March 19.

“That was a month between runs so I stuck a bit more work into him for this,” Edmonds said.

“I think this will prove a good form race and he’ll run in the Gold Coast Guineas next and then we’ll see where to go from there.”
