Brilliant Doomben double to start the season

Aug 01, 2015

There are few better ways to start a season than with a city double.

It took Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds just 35 minutes to make a bright start to the 2015/16 season with a running double at Doomben on the opening day of the new term.

Martilago provided the first leg of Edmonds’s double with her strong win in the Queensland Breeders Class 6 Handicap (1600m) with Paul Hammersley in the saddle.

The Encosta De Lago mare won in Class 5 company at the Gold Coast over 1400m at her previous outing before relishing the firm conditions underfoot to continue her march through the grades with another victory after racing handy to the speed.

Marilago’s sixth win from 19 starts earned her owners another $41,600 in prizemoney, taking her overall tally to more than $150,000.

Lesley’s Choice completed the stable double with her dominant win in the National Jockeys’ Trust Celebration Day Handicap (1100m) with Jeff Lloyd in the saddle.

The Exceed And Excel mare won in record time at Ipswich in May before finishing at Doomben at her previous outing on July 11.

Lesley’s Choice raced near the speed in her $65,000 assignment before shooting clear under Lloyd’s urgings in the straight to post her fifth win in 17 starts by more than three lengths.

Great stable supporters Segenhoe Thoroughbreds are the owners of both mares and we congratulate them and all involved with Toby Edmonds Racing’s brilliant start to the 2015/16 season.

Long may it continue.
