Epic win for smart 2YO at Doomben

Jul 26, 2015

Mr Epic has flown home late to notch his maiden win in exciting fashion at Doomben.

Mr Epic had promised plenty with his first three starts spread over two preparations but showed he has a horse with a bright future with a dominant win in Hughes Equipment Hire 2YO Handicap (1200m).

The son of Husson pleased trainer Toby Edmonds in his two trials at the Gold Coast before a wide barrier made life difficult for the youngster when he resumed at Ipswich.

Drawing barrier four looked a positive on paper but the $20,000 race did not turn out the way Edmonds or jockey Jeff Lloyd anticpated.

Mr Epic jumped well and Lloyd had him in a comfortable spot midfield until the speed slowed dramatically after which the gelding was forced three-wide from the 750m.

Mr Epic still had a significant amount of ground to make up entering the straight but the gelding hit top gear when Lloyd asked him for an effort with 300m to run.

The promising galloper launched at the line in the last 150m, relishing his first go at 1200m, as he powered home over the top of his opposition to score what turned out to be an easy win.

Mr Epic earned $19,800 in prizemoney and QTIS bonuses for his brilliant effort, propelling his stakes tally to more than $30,000.

Congratulations to Mr Epic’s owners – the Watson Family – and all involved with the rising three-year-old’s outstanding maiden win.
