Sagaronne Salutes in The Listed Phoenix Stakes

May 30, 2015

Fresh from a last start half-length victory on her home track at the Gold Coast a few weeks back, two-year-old Real Saga filly Sagaronne stepped up to stakes class on Saturday, May 30 at Doomben.

Carrying the number 13 saddle cloth, jockey Blake Shinn jumped the filly out well from the gates and she settled back in the pack in the opening race of the day, the Listed The Phoenix Stakes (1350m).

Purchased from the Magic Millions QTIS Yearling Sale for $82,500 by Toby Edmonds, the well-bred filly (pictured as a yearling) appeared to race three wide at the tail of the field for a portion of the race before Shinn allowed her to start to make ground at the 600m mark.

As they rounded the home turn and the runs were coming, Sagaronne still had many lengths to make up but started to charge through the field and when it looked as if the race favourite Hand Fast for Godolphin was going to take the win, Sagaronne sprouted wings to record a long neck win, with a half-length back to Bring a Secret in third who had tried to lead throughout.

Once Sagaronne hit the lead, the filly pricked her ears, indicative of a horse with good ability and with something in reserve.

Carrying the famed Segenhoe Thoroughbred silks and racing in the ownership of Segenhoe Thoroughbreds Australia, Doubleit, Mr J Bourke, Mr B S Brosseuk, Mr K R Green, Just Fun Racing, Mr G Thompson, Mrs E L Salter, Ms V W Lee and Mr J Salter, the filly is by the Group 2 winner Real Saga, out of the Group 3 Doomben Roses winner Lasoron, so on pedigree looks capable of running over more ground.
