Octaraja Wins First Up

Aug 02, 2014

Having her first start for the Toby Edmonds Stable, four-year-old Lonhro mare Octaraja headed to the Gold Coast on August 2 and contested the STA Travel Maiden Handicap over 900m.

An impressive length and a half winner of a barrier trial at the same track over 840m two weeks prior, the Topline Thoroughbreds purchased runner appreciate the change in surrounds to break her maiden at her first race in the "Sunshine State."

Ridden by Jackson Morris, the mare started the race favourite and was allowed to settle at the tail of the field.

A furlong from home Jackson asked Octaraja for her effort and she responded exploding down the centre of the track for an emphatic win, finishing the final six hundred metres in an impressive 33.1 seconds, winning by a long neck margin from Kleinton Kid with one-and-a-quarter lengths to Mighty Sequlao.

Toby was delighted commenting “that was a terrific effort I knew the 900m was way to short but for the mare to finish the way she did and win was ultra-impressive, it was great to see her produce on race day what I have seen at home".

Out of the Heissio mare Lady Helissio, herself a half-sister to Group Three winner Dakasha, Listed winner Dorky and the Listed winner Obglo, the pedigree of this mare is full of back type performers and if this mare can continue on her winning ways it will assist her heavily when she returns from the track to embark on the next start of her career as a broodmare.
