Quick Witted salutes on debut

Aug 14, 2013

When four-year-old mares have their first start, sometimes they need a few runs under their belt before the show something, but not the Toby Edmonds-trained Rock Of Gibraltar mare Quick Witted!

Originally based in Sydney with the Gai Waterhouse stable, Quick Witted had three trials before heading to the “sunshine state” and the care of astute Gold Coast-based trainer Toby Edmonds.

Pictured heading to Eagle Farm to contest the XXXX Gold Maiden Plate over 1400m, the mare jumped away well from an outside barrier for leading jockey Chris Munce and after being out wide for a bit, the mare went forward to sit just off the leaders.

As the field rounded the home turn, Munce pushed the button and the mare went for home, taking the race by a neck from the dead-heaters Cosmic Belle and Shattering.

Bred and raced by Stuart Ramsey’s Ramsey Pastoral Company Pty Ltd, Quick Witted is bred to be good – being  out of the Marauding mare Haywire, a full-sister to Group One winner Drum, as well as the stakes placed Tambour, who is in turn the dam of multiple Group One winner Grand Armee.

Haywire is also a three-quarter sister to Hong Kong Champion Sprinter Genius And Evil, as well as the Group One South Australian Oaks winner Anamato and the Listed winner Port Watch. Other stakes winners in the family include Group One Rosehill Guineas winner Dealer Principal and they Group Three Newcastle J.C. Spring Stakes winner Mearas.

Edmonds Racing is building quite a successful relationship with Stuart Ramsey with recent winners including the Snitzel gelding Knockabout, a very nice winner at the beginning of August at the Sunshine Coast.
