Shtarker streaks to victory at Sunshine Coast

Dec 16, 2012

Shtarker has capitalised on a textbook ride from jockey Tim Bell to break through in the Ideal Electrical Suppliers Maiden Handicap (1200m) at the Sunshine Coast.

The three-year-old had trialled solidly in preparation for his return to racing after 21 weeks off the scene before the gelding lived up to his hit-outs with a dominant performance.

Bell, who partnered Shtarker in his two lead-up trials, had the advantage of barrier one for his ride on the son of Ferocity in the $10,000 event.

Shtarker began only fairly but quickly improved along the inside to sit on the back of the speed, about three lengths from the leaders, which set a reasonable speed throughout the early and middle stages.

Shtarker improved to be right on the back of frontrunners, when asked to quicken by Bell, before a gap opened on the inside of the leaders at the 350 metres.

Bell drove Shtarker through the run before the gelding quickened strongly to draw clear of his opposition over the final 100 metres to score by a length.

Shtarker notched his maiden success at his sixth start while the $6,500 winner’s cheque took his prizemoney to more than $22,000.
