Gundy Gal a stayer of the future after maiden win

Oct 18, 2012

Gundy Gal has relished her first attempt at a staying trip to break her maiden in brilliant fashion at the Gold Coast.

The daughter of US-bred stallion Aussie Rules joined the Toby Edmonds stable midyear after beginning her career at another Queensland operation but the Gold Coast trainer decided to adopt a different approach.

Gundy Gal had never raced over further than 1200 metres before joining the Edmonds stable but her new trainer gave the filly two runs at 1400 metres before stepping her up further in trip again.

The grey then turned in a terrific effort to finish second over 1600 metres at Ballina on October 1 before lining up in the Signature Equine Transport Maiden over 1800 metres on her home track.

Chris Munce took the ride on Gundy Gal in the $10,000 event. Last season’s Brisbane champion rider took her to the lead soon after the start before rating Gundy Gal perfectly throughout the middle part of the event.

Gundy Gal quickened stylishly under Munce from the 400 metres. The filly quickly opened a good break on her opposition before Gundy Gal bolted in by 4-1/2 lengths.

Gundy Gal posted her maiden win at her eighth attempt but the run was her fourth for the Toby Edmonds stable.

The filly took her prizemoney tally past $10,000 with the promise of plenty more to come as she makes her way through the staying ranks in Queensland.

Congratulations to her owners - P W Lewis, G W Jacques, J D Handley, R B McCrory & N H Stedman.
