Cross-border raid pays off at Grafton

Sep 21, 2012

Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds completed a successful south of the border raid when Golden Maharaja produced a tough on-pace performance to score at Grafton.

Golden Maharaja joined the Toby Edmonds stable midyear after starting his career with the Trevor Bailey team.

The son of Untouchable turned in four solid runs at Queensland provincial venues before Edmonds found the Hearfield & Rediger Tiling Maiden (1600m) as the perfect target for Golden Maharaja

Jockey Cassandra Schmidt travelled to Grafton to ride the horse with the inside gate making her task  to find a comfortable position slightly easier.

Golden Maharaja began brightly, prompting Schmidt to press forward to make best use of barrier one.

The five-year-old shared a reasonable speed in the early and middle stages but was travelling much better than her co-leaders on the home turn.

Schmidt sent Golden Maharaja a length and a half clear of his opposition at the 200 metres before the five-year-old’s stout maternal pedigree kicked in over the final stages, allowing him to break his maiden at his eighth start.

Congratulations to Golden Maharaja’s owners - Mrs H Jones & Mr A Jones.
