La Compromis answers wet-track query

Sat, 27th August 2011

PUNTERS got off on the right foot when well-backed favourite La Compromis handled the heavy conditions to win at the Gold Coast this afternoon.
With persistent rain falling throughout the morning, the Gold Coast track was downgraded to a heavy (8) prior to the running of the first race, the Steel Integrated Logistics Class 1 Hcp (1800m).
The Toby Edmonds-trained La Compromis was the only one the punters really wanted in the six-horse field and she firmed from $2.10 to run the $1.80 favourite. The four-year-old mare went into the race with two solid second placings to her credit, but was something of an unknown quantity on rain-affected going.
“Her one prior run in the wet was here at the Coast three runs back and she was beaten a long way, so there was that query with her,’’ said Edmonds.
“But she slugged through it okay today.’’
Ridden today by apprentice Patrick Keane, La Compromis settled in fourth spot and finished the race off strongly to win by 1-1/4 lengths from Mightysui ($5) with pacemaker Annia Minor ($7) battling on for third, 2-1/2 lengths away.
